Problem
Teams take notes in one tool, write docs in another, and start from a blank page every time — collaboration and AI assistance live in separate products.
Why I built it
To combine live collaboration, document management, and Gemini-powered template generation in one place: open a doc, co-edit in real time, and generate structured starting points with AI.
Architecture
Auth and identity
Clerk handles sign-in and session management so every document edit is attributable to a real user.
Real-time collaboration
Firebase provides live document sync — concurrent edits converge for all collaborators without manual refresh.
AI template generation
Gemini AI generates smart templates and document structure from a short prompt, giving users an editable starting point instead of a blank page.
Document management
Documents are organized, searchable, and shareable from a single workspace built with React, TypeScript, Shadcn, and Tailwind.
Engineering challenges
- Keeping concurrent edits consistent while AI-generated content streams into a live document.
- Designing templates that are genuinely useful starting points rather than generic filler the user deletes.
Lessons learned
- Real-time sync plus AI generation is a strong combination: the AI drafts, the collaborators refine.
- Authentication and attribution matter from day one in any collaborative product.
